The Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain is a large Roman Catholic Church whose construction began in 1882 and remains incomplete till this day. Because of its sole reliance on private donations, the church experienced slow construction and suffered greatly due to periods of civil unrest such as the Spanish Civil War. During that time in 1936, revolutionaries set the crypt on fire and trespassed into the workshop and partially destroying Antoni Gaudi, the original designer’s, plans and models. This set the construction back an additional 16 years due of the arduous nature of rebuilding and piecing together the destroyed models and mock-ups. Interestingly enough, although incomplete it is still considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
