The Jama Masjid of Delhi or the Masjid-I Jehan-Numa is one of the largest mosques in India. It was built in the 1650s during the reign of the Mughal Empire having been commissioned by the emperor at the time, Shah Jahan. It is located in the Mughal Capital of Shahjahanabad, currently known as Old Delhi. Jama Masjid was considered to be the imperial mosque for the Empire until its collapse in 1857. Not only did it have political influence, but it was also considered a religious symbol of the Islamic power and presence across India during this time. It is still in use today and is one of Delhi’s most iconic locations as it is closely related to the history of Old Delhi.
